Samsung Captivate Android 2.2 Update Guide

Samsung Fascinate was the next US Galaxy S variant to receive the Android 2.2 update, it seems that AT&T was faster than The Big Red.

AT&T has recently announced on its FaceBook page that the Samsung Captivate Android 2.2 update will be released today -- February 24th. No further details have been released ( will the Samsung Captivate Android 2.2 update be released in OTA waves ? will the users have to install it via Kies ? and so on ).

AT&T has also posted a short interview with Dante Martin, Senior AT&T Android Project Manager, where some fan questions have been answered.

When asked about the very long time it took AT&T to release the Samsung Captivate Android 2.2 update, Dante said that, despite what everyone thinks, when Google releases a new build it can’t be automatically pushed, a few more steps being necessary before the update can reach the masses.

So, after Google releases the build, the manufacturer ( in this case Samsung ) has to take it, apply its tweaks and mods ( eg the TouchWiz UI ) and then test it to make sure everything works as intended. Then the carrier ( here, AT&T ) takes the update and tests in the lab to make sure that everything works with its network. When bugs are discovered, the manufacturer gets involved again and the two companies work together towards a resolution.

Yeah, yeah…this is indeed the flow but it doesn’t explain why the US Samsung Galaxy S community has received the Android 2.2 updates long after most regions of the world did.
