Madonna's halftime show — which featured hip-hoppers Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. clad in cheerleader attire and pompoms, singing along to the pop star's new single, Give Me All Your Luvin'— was upstaged when M.I.A. (aka Maya Arulpragasam) extended her middle finger to the cameras. A record 111.3 million viewers saw the British rapper's brief obscene gesture during the telecast, the most-watched TV program in U.S. history, according to Nielsen figures.

The Super Bowl is such a mainstream event, "things that at a typical performance would not make anybody bat an eye become the subject of a very intense focus," says Rolling Stone contributing editor Anthony DeCurtis.

The rapper — who was one of Google's most-searched subjects Monday — isn't commenting on the incident, but such rude moments aren't out of the norm for the music industry.

Marks isn't sure whether the Paper Planes performer's errant appendage — a switch from the handgun motion she uses in the video for the new Madonna single — will help or hinder sales for her upcoming new album. (The first single was released Friday. The title? Bad Girls.)

But Chris Willman of Yahoo Music definitely sees it as a plus for M.I.A. "I don't think she's ever gotten this much attention before," he says. "That's the kind of publicity you can't buy when you have an album coming out.
"Who would have guessed that Madonna would be an afterthought in what people are talking about after the show? Madonna might be more mad than any conservative groups."

In the long run, the incident won't be as infamous as Janet Jackson's, when the singer's breast was exposed for about a second while performing with Justin Timberlake during the 2004 Super Bowl. The FCC fined CBS $550,000, but that was fine overturned by a federal appeals court.

M.I.A., known for her rebellious, brash persona and music, performed in a cheerleader outfit for a performance of Madonna's latest single, "Give Me All Your Luvin,'" on which she and Minaj -- also onstage in a pom-pom girl uniform -- are featured rappers.

Her bratty gesture recalled another malfunction of the wardrobe variety in 2004, when Janet Jackson famously flashed a nipple while performing with Justin Timberlake in the halftime show, sending the FCC and viewers into a frenzy.

High-precision, high-durability shutter
The Nikon D800’s shutter unit has been tested to well over 200,000 cycles of release to prove durability and precision. While the shutter unit is designed to run at a speed range of 1/8,000 to 30s, its intelligent self-diagnostic shutter monitor automatically monitors actual shutter speeds in order to correct possible variances that can occur over time.

High dynamic range (HDR)
The Nikon D800 can shoot two frames in a single shutter release, but at different exposures: one overexposed and one underexposed. The camera then instantly combines them to create an image covering a wider dynamic range. The range can be widened by up to 3 EV for different looks, all full of saturation and tonal gradation, while the smoothness of the edge where the two exposures meet can be adjusted for a more natural appearance.

The piece is pretty, but these test films generally don't tell us very much about the performance of the camera. They are too controlled (check out the behind the scenes footage to the left) and produced with the sole intention of making things look as lush and juicy as possible. Nikon has so far failed to produce a DSLR that videographers covet as much as Canon's 5D Mark II. It'll still be some time until we see how the D800 measures up to further scrutiny.

Thursday night on "NY Ink" (Thu., 9 p.m. EST on TLC), "Megan Massacre" told the crew at Ami Jame's tattoo shop a secret about herself that she's been hiding for years. After finding out that Tila Tequila had booked an appointment to come into the shop, the team jumped online to find out more about her. James had some vague idea about her reality show "where she dated men, women, everything in between."

Online they found a lot of her modeling pictures, including the nude work she's done. This prompted Jessica to say, "I don't think people should do that ever."

Megan could have kept quiet at this point, but she didn't. "I've posed nude before," she revealed. "It's part of modeling."

The guys were already on the computer, so what did she think was going to happen. Almost immediately, her pictures started filling the screen. "Stop looking at me naked!" she shouted, but it was too late. And it's not something she's likely to live down any time soon.

Standard practice is to put connection strings into your configuration file. The string can then be changed when it is deployed. If you followed that practice then you can simply edit your configuration file. If, instead, you hard coded the connection string (rather than the name of the connection string in the config file) throughout your application then you cannot change it without recompilation. If you have time then you can fix all this up to load the connection string from the config using ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["name"] where "name" is the name of the connection that is stored in the config file.

PROMETHEUS was the Titan god of forethought and crafty counsel who was entrusted with the task of moulding mankind out of clay. His attempts to better the lives of his creation brought him into direct conflict with Zeus. Firstly he tricked the gods out of the best portion of the sacrificial feast, acquiring the meat for the feasting of man. Then, when Zeus withheld fire, he stole it from heaven and delivered it to mortal kind hidden inside a fennel-stalk. As punishment for these rebellious acts, Zeus ordered the creation of Pandora (the first woman) as a means to deliver misfortune into the house of man, or as a way to cheat mankind of the company of the good spirits. Prometheus meanwhile, was arrested and bound to a stake on Mount Kaukasos where an eagle was set to feed upon his ever-regenerating liver (or, some say, heart). Generations later the great hero Herakles came along and released the old Titan from his torture.

PROMETHEUS (Promêtheus), is sometimes called a Titan, though in reality he did not belong to the Titans, but was only a son of the Titan Iapetus (whence he is designated by the patronymic Iapetionidês, Hes. Theog. 528; Apollon Rhod. iii. 1087), by Clymene, so that he was a brother of Atlas, Menoetius, and Epimetheus (Hes. Theog. 507). His name signifies "forethought," as that of his brother Epimetheus denotes "afterthought." Others call Prometheus a son of Themis (Aeschyl. Prom. 18), or of Uranus and Clymene, or of the Titan Eurymedon and Hera (Potter, Comment. ad Lyc. Cass. 1283; Eustath. ad Hom. p. 987). By Pandora, Hesione, or Axiothea, he is said to have been the father of Deucalion (Aesch. Prom. 560 ; Tzetz. ad Lyc. 1283; Schol. ad Apollon. Rhod. ii. 1086), by Pyrrha or Clymene he begot Hellen (and according to some also Deucalion; Schol. ad Apollon. l. c.; Schol. ad Pind. Ol. ix. 68), and by Celaeno he was the father of Lycus and Chimareus (Tzetz. ad. Lyc. 132, 219), while Herodotus (iv. 45) calls his wife Asia.

The following is an outline of the legends related of him by the ancients. Once in the reign of Zeus, when gods and men were disputing with one another at Mecone (afterwards Sicyon, Schol. ad Pind. Nem. ix. 123), Prometheus, with a view to deceive Zeus and rival him in prudence, cut up a bull and divided it into two parts : he wrapped up the best parts and the intestines in the skin, and at the top he placed the stomach, which is one of the worst parts, while the second heap consisted of the bones covered with fat. When Zeus pointed out to him how badly he had made the division, Prometheus desired him to choose, but Zeus, in his anger, and seeing through the stratagem of Prometheus, chose the heap of bones covered with the fat. The father of the gods avenged himself by withholding fire from mortals, but Prometheus stole it in a hollow tube (ferula, narthêx, Aeschyl. Prom. 110). Zeus now, in order to punish men, caused Hephaestus to mould a virgin, Pandora, of earth, whom Athena adorned with all the charms calculated to entice mortals; Prometheus himself was put in chains, and fastened to a pillar, where an eagle sent by Zeus consumed in the daytime his liver, which, in every succeeding night, was restored again. Prometheus was thus exposed to perpetual torture, but Heracles killed the eagle and delivered the sufferer, with the consent of Zeus, who thus had an opportunity of allowing his son to gain immortal fame (Hes. Theog. 521, &c., Op. et Dies, 47, &c. ; Hygin. Poet. Astr. ii. 15; Apollod. ii. 5. § 11). Prometheus had cautioned his brother Epimetheus against accepting any present from Zeus, but Epimetheus, disregarding the advice, accepted Pandora, who was sent to him by Zeus, through the mediation of Hermes. Pandora then lifted the lid of the vessel in which the foresight of Prometheus had concealed all the evils which might torment mortals in life. Diseases and sufferings of every kind now issued forth, but deceitful hope alone remained behind (Hes. Op. et Dies, 83, &c.; comp. Horat. Carm. i. 3. 25, &c.). This is an outline of the legend about Prometheus, as contained in the poems of Hesiod.

Aeschylus, in his trilogy Prometheus, added various new features to it, for, according to him, Prometheus himself is an immortal god, the friend of the human race, the giver of fire, the inventor of the useful arts, an omniscient seer, an heroic sufferer, who is overcome by the superior power of Zeus, but will not bend his inflexible mind. Although he himself belonged to the Titans, he is nevertheless represented as having assisted Zeus against the Titans (Prom. 218), and he is further said to have opened the head of Zeus when the latter gave birth to Athena (Apollod. i. 3. § 6). But when Zeus succeeded to the kingdom of heaven, and wanted to extirpate the whole race of man, the place of which he proposed to give to quite a new race of beings, Prometheus prevented the execution of the scheme, and saved the human race from destruction (Prom. 228, 233). He deprived them of their knowledge of the future, and gave them hope instead (248, &c.). He further taught them the use of fire, made them acquainted with architecture, astronomy, mathematics, the art of writing, the treatment of domestic animals, navigation, medicine, the art of prophecy, working in metal, and all the other arts (252, 445, &c., 480, &c.). But, as in all these things he had acted contrary to the will of Zeus, the latter ordered Hephaestus to chain him to a rock in Scythia, which was done in the presence of Cratos and Bia, two ministers of Zeus. In Scythia he was visited by the Oceanides; Io also came to him, and he foretold her the wanderings and sufferings which were yet in store for her, as well as her final relief (703, &c.). Hermes then likewise appears, and desires him to make known a prophecy which was of great importance to Zeus, for Prometheus knew that by a certain woman Zeus would beget a son, who was to dethrone his father, and Zeus wanted to have a more accurate knowledge of this decree of fate. But Prometheus steadfastly refused to reveal the decree of fate, whereupon Zeus, by a thunderbolt, sent Prometheus, together with the rock to which he was chained, into Tartarus (Horat. Carm. ii. 18, 35). After the lapse of a long time, Prometheus returned to the upper world, to endure a fresh course of suffering, for he was now fastened to mount Caucasus, and tormented by an eagle, which every day, or every third day, devoured his liver, which was restored again in the night (Apollon. Rhod. ii. 1247, &c. iii. 853; Strab. xv. p. 688 ; Philostr. Vit. Apoll. ii. 3; Hygin. Poet. Astr. ii. 15; Aeschyl. Prom. 1015, &c.). This state of suffering was to last until some other god, of his own accord, should take his place, and descend into Tartarus for him (Prom. 1025). This came to pass when Cheiron, who had been incurably wounded by an arrow of Heracles, desired to go into Hades; and Zeus allowed him to supply the place of Prometheus (Apollod. ii. 5. § 4; comp. Cheiron). According to others, however, Zeus himself delivered Prometheus, when at length the Titan was prevailed upon to reveal to Zeus the decree of fate, that, if he should become by Thetis the either of a son, that son should deprive him of the sovereignty. (Serv. ad Virg. Eclog. vi. 42 ; Apollod. iii. 13. § 5; Hygin. Fab. 54; comp. Aeschyl. Prom. 167, &c. 376.)

There was also an account, stating that Prometheus had created men out of earth and water, at the very beginning of the human race, or after the flood of Deucalion, when Zeus is said to have ordered him and Athena to make men out of the mud, and the winds to breathe life into them (Apollod. i. 7. § 1; Ov. Met. i. 81; Etym. Mag. s. v. Promêtheus). Prometheus is said to have given to men something of all the qualities possessed by the other animals (Horat Carm. i. 16. 13). The kind of earth out of which Prometheus formed men was shown in later times near Panopeus in Phocis (Paus. x. 4. § 3), and it was at his suggestion that Deucalion, when the flood approached, built a ship, and carried into it provisions, that he and Pyrrha might be able to support themselves during the calamity (Apollod. i. 7. § 2). Prometheus, in the legend, often appears in connection with Athena, e. g., he is said to have been punished on mount Caucasus for the criminal love he entertained for her (Schol. ad Apollon. Rhod. ii. 1249) and he is further said, with her assistance, to have ascended into heaven, and there secretly to have lighted his torch at the chariot of Helios, in order to bring down the fire to man (Serv. ad Virg. Eclog. vi. 42). At Athens Prometheus had a sanctuary in the Academy, from whence a torch-race took place in honour of him (Paus. i. 30. § 2; Schol. ad Soph. Oed. Col. 55; Harpocrat. s. v. lampas).

Novo7 Tablet Which $99

Is $99 a magic figure, especially for a tablet computer? Several months ago, Hewlett-Packard company sold its WebOS-based tablet HP TouchPad with the price of $99 in a firesale (and it did sell like hot cakes). And now, reports say the HP TouchPad will hit the shelves again this weekend and will carry the same price tag - $99.

HP TouchPad will make a comeback in two versions: 16GB and 32 GB and will be sold for $99 and $149 respectively, starting December 11 at 6:00 p.m. Central time. The TouchPads will only be available on HP's eBay store.

And, that's not all - the Internet is also abuzz with the news that the world's first Ice Cream Sandwich-powered tablet - Novo7 - has a price tag of $99. Novo7, the result of a joint effort by MIPS Technologies and Ingenic Semiconductor, is expected to hit the U.S. market in the upcoming months.

Both HP TouchPad and Novo7 seem to be valuable tablets (read: something to get your paws upon) as they are selling for only $99. So, the $99 question is - which tablet will you buy?

The HP TouchPad, which features 9.7-inch multi-touch, 1.2GHz dual-core and WebOS operation system, makes a wonderful Christmas gift. But be warned - the TouchPads, which may go on sale this weekend, are refurbished versions with a 90-day limited warranty and HP will no accept any returns unless they arrive defective.

Novo7 has very good features too, including the latest Ice Cream Sandwich operation system that combines the best of Android OSes for the smartphone (Gingerbread) and the tablet (Honeycomb), two cameras (front- and rear-facing), 3D capability and 1080p video decoding. But If you decide to buy one, you have to wait for several months as the exact U.S. launch date is not known.

However, for the sake of convenience, we have listed some important things below that could help you make a good choice:

In its first major push into mobile in years, HP launched its TouchPad tablet in June. The tablet runs the webOS mobile operating system. The company also launched its Veer smartphone earlier this year.

"It's obvious that they were using the TouchPad as a make or break event for webOS devices," said Ben Galbraith, former director of developer relations for webOS, in an interview.

The news comes in the wake of a huge announcement from Google earlier this week, when the Mountain View company announced its acquisition of hardware company Motorola Mobility Holdings for $12.5 billion. Traditionally a software-only company, Google is making its first foray into the hardware business. (The company did test the waters slightly with recent partnerships with Samsung and Acer, which both make the Chrome OS-powered Chromebook.)

The news of the Motorola acquisition set the technology world abuzz, with pundits speculating that Google would alienate its other hardware partners - HTC, Samsung, LG and Sony Ericsson. The new relationship between Google and Motorola could make Google's partners wary that competitor Motorola may be privy to inside information on Android, cutting others out of the loop.

Tech pundits speculated that rivals HP and Microsoft could potentially capitalize on Google's acquisition by licensing webOS and Windows Mobile OS out to these manufacturers.

"OEM's like Samsung, HTC, and LG are looking to hedge their smartphone strategy in the wake of Google's Motorola acqusition," said Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman Epps in an interview. "They're looking at Windows, but potentially webOS is now in the mix."

HP CEO Leo Apotheker said recently that the company had plans to license its software to third-party manufacturers.

"We're looking at all business models, from licensing to any other possibility for webOS," Apotheker said in a conference call on Thursday.

HP's TouchPad tablet arrived DOA, despite an extensive TV ad campaign that features actor and comedian Russell Brand and Glee star Leah Michele (seen below). Best Buy retailers offering the tablet for sale are reportedly sitting on hundreds of thousands of unsold units, according to AllThingsD.

It's also possible that HP could follow in Motorola's footsteps, putting its patent portfolio on the market for a hefty sale. Google claimed multiple times that its acquisition was important for Motorola's valuable trove of software patents, which would help protect Google from the deluge of lawsuits the company is currently facing.

"They made the first official mass-consumer smartphone. I'm sure they hold some very valuable patents," said Galbraith.

In the wake of this week's news, all eyes are now on key mobile players Microsoft, Nokia and RIM - the three major companies trailing clear mobile industry leaders Apple and Google - to see which OS will take on iOS and Android.

"There's absolutely room for three operating systems out there," said Rotman Epps. "The question was whether there was room for a fourth or a fifth. HP just answered that question."

We don't incorporate users' personal data unless it's very explicit or commonly-understood that your friends are playing the game and that certain things are going to appear."

Part of the reason that the Carmen Sandiego games were so widely popular in their heyday was because they were actually educational. Many of today's adult gamers will tell you they learned geography from the game's objectives, and learned research skills from scanning the Fodor's Guides that often came with games.

Whither Carmen in the Google era, then, when a clue about the world is just one browser tab away? "We definitely designed with Google in mind," Kazemi asserts. "That was absolutely part of the design from day one; it would be futile to fight against that."

So the team focused on upping the challenge ante with the harder cases as players progress, phrasing clues in such a way that they're still tough to Google; that players may still need to read and learn a bit, or employ deductive reasoning.

"One of the things I can do is see what clues are giving players the most trouble," says Kazemi. "And some of them are the ones that involve some wordplay that Google can't necessarily immediately help you out with. Others might refer to a neighborhood by its name -- but that neighborhood might exist in a bunch of different cities."

The result? In order to succeed at some of Carmen Sandiego on Facebook's tougher challenges, players need to hone their internet research skills the way they once had to learn to use an index with the original game.

"In terms of looking at player behavior, what we discovered from looking at the data was that on easy cases, people tend to fail at the logical deduction side, where you have to figure out who the crook is," Kazemi adds. "But then, on hard cases for the advanced players, it really comes down to answering clues correctly. We're re-balancing it so that you can start to see medium and hard cases earlier in the game, because those are actually really interesting."

In Carmen Sandiego, time is money, literally. Players are given an allotment of time to solve each case, and each action -- quizzing witnesses, traveling around the world -- costs time. It's possible to resolve all the cases within the time given, but errors might mean losing the suspect. Players can buy in-game currency they can spend to keep global flights from costing time, or to give them a second chance at identifying a crook.

The easier the cases are, the less likely it is the player will feel the urge to spend any of the coins at all to make the game easier -- and given that players start with a given amount of free coins to try, it seems like players might be engaged with a game for quite some time before they feel the need or desire to spend real-world money on in-game currency.

Oregon Trail, on the other hand, is different, requiring costs immediately to solve the various ailments that strike the player's party and ensure their successful passage. "For Carmen, you don't just get new users and expect to see an immediate revenue increase," Kazemi explains. Carmen Sandiego, then, appears to be something of an experiment in delayed monetization -- will players who invest in the game long-term actually contribute to the game's revenue?

"It's always a challenge to analyze the performance of a game," Kazemi suggests. "It's easy with a game where you get all these new users and immediately see an increase in revenue; it's nice to see events that are obviously attached to each other like that, and it's a much more dicey proposition to say, 'well, there could be a five or six day delay [until a revenue boost appears].'"

"It's exciting to be able to have both these games side by side and be able to look at them... they're fundamentally different games across a lot of different axes. And then to cross-reference that with Zoo Kingdom, which is a more traditional type where you're building a zoo and there's a harvesting mechanic... it'll be nice to have that information."

Kazemi hopes that the premium the studio places on quality will help with the performance of its games on Facebook, a space where many argue that quality or visual depth doesn't matter nearly as much -- if at all -- versus a hooky mechanic that keeps players clicking. Carmen Sandiego in particular is visually engaging, with music, unintrusive sound, and a creative paper cut-out art style that makes it stylish.

"It's to do with our pedigree as a traditional game developer," Kazemi says. "It's the same creative people at the company and I think that just carries on in our culture."

Any lessons for other developers working in the social space? "Launching two games in two weeks is totally crazy," Kazemi laughs. "I'm not sure I recommend it. As far as other things, we've been extremely happy: This is our first time releasing games on major licensed IPs, but launching with a big IP behind your game is advantageous in many ways. There's a lot more press coverage and a lot more interest compared to Zoo Kingdom."

"I definitely think there's a sweet spot for mid-sized developers taking advantage of recognizable IP," he adds. "I'm not sure it scales to the big folks, but for a mid-size developer, I think working with established IP is one of the few ways that you can compete with the really big social game publishers out there."

As for battery life, Kyocera and Sprint aren't giving definite numbers, but we were told things would last about a day with heavy use of both screens -- and the Echo is being sold in a bundle with a second battery in an external charging case, so you should have plenty of juice on the go. Downsides? Well, it's not the most attractive phone we've ever seen, and we'd be remiss if we didn't point out that there's just a lone rear-facing 5 megapixel camera with 720p video capture and that the Echo is 3G-only -- there's no WiMAX, which is a bit odd for a Sprint halo device. In fact, for an extra $129 you actually can use the Archos 5 as a relatively sophisticated in-car GPS system. Unlike its predecessor, the 605 WiFi, the Archos 5 is controlled almost entirely by its touch screen, with the exception of a power button and volume rocker on the top edge of the device. A 3.5mm headphone output is located midway up on the left edge, making the gadget more awkward to hold than the 605 WiFi. Thankfully, a built-in kickstand folds out from the back of the Archos 5 for hands-free viewing.

The Archos 5 measures 5 inches wide, 3 inches tall, and 0.5 inch thick (or 0.75 inch thick for the 120GB and 250GB versions), making it not much bigger than the 605 WiFi. Despite its similar size, Archos was able to squeeze an extra half-inch of screen onto the Archos 5 by removing the redundant physical controls found on the company's previous players and placing the integrated speaker on the right edge of the device instead of the front.

Another surprising design change from Archos is the use of a glossy-coated screen instead of the matte, antiglare screens that have been a hallmark of its previous products. Combined with the Archos 5's glossy, reflective enclosure, Archos has created an ideal breeding ground for fingerprints and smudges.

Another small, but significant design feature that distinguishes the Archos 5 from previous Archos PVPs is the use of new proprietary dock connection. We've given Archos some flack before on its use of a nonstandard connector for its USB cable, but the upshot of the unique dock connection has been its compatibility with Archos accessories such as battery packs, FM tuners, video cameras, and AV docks. The introduction of a new dock connection on the Archos 5 has severed its compatibility with existing Archos accessories, with the exception of the in-car GPS cradle. Archos is busy making new accessories for the Archos 5 (including the new Archos 5 DVR Station); however, early adopters have only a few options currently and users looking to upgrade from older models may feel some resentment over replacing their existing accessories.

Archos 5 has plenty of features to brag about, including music and video playback, a photo viewer, Opera Web browser, Flash 9 video and game support, a PDF reader, e-mail support, and an integrated video download store. You also get optional support for digital video recording and output through the latest Archos DVR Station, and support for 3G and 3.5G HSDPA wireless connections through the use of USB modem dongles offered by your mobile carrier.

Despite the manufacturer's protest that Archos 5 shouldn't be categorized as a mere portable video player, video playback is the Archos 5's strongest feature. Out of the box, the Archos 5 offers support for AVI, WMV, MPEG4, and Flash video content with no transcoding necessary for videos sized at or below 640x480. Although Archos makes no mention of it, we were happy to see that DRM-protected WMV videos from Amazon's Video On-Demand service played on the Archos 5 with no problem. For an extra $20, you can outfit the Archos 5 with a high-definition software plug-in to enable 720p video playback from WMV HD, MPEG4, or MPEG-2 files (including VOB and DivX formats). To play h.264 videos, you'll need to throw another $20 at the Archos 5 for a Podcast media plug-in, which also enables AAC audio playback.

The music player of the Archos 5 is essentially identical to the 605 WiFi, although the design is more elegant. By default, the music player supports MP3, WMA (including DRM-protected files), FLAC, Ogg, and WAV files (with format support for AAC available as a $20 plug-in). You can also set up the Archos 5 to stream music over Wi-Fi from nearby computers or stream conventional Internet radio stations (sorry, no Pandora). During playback, the Archos 5's music player displays album artwork, allows for your music library to be sorted by ID3 tags, and gives you the ability to bookmark long files such as lectures and audiobooks. A five-band graphic EQ is included, but the 605 WiFi's independent bass boost setting is not.

It’s a cut above the average netbook in having a 1.5GHz dual-core Intel Atom N550 processor, 2GB of DDR3 memory, and either a 250GB (5,400 RPM) or 320GB (7,200 RPM) hard drive. The 10.1in high-def screen offers capacitive multitouch operation and shows a full 1,366 x 768 pixels, like a typical 13.3in laptop. There’s a built-in 1.3-megapixel webcam and a digital array microphone, so it’s easy to use for video calls. Colour choices are Foggy Night (standard), Fastback Red and Marlin Blue. The Duo that I tried was a pre-production prototype, and therefore not a reliable guide to the final build quality or performance. However, the keyboard was good for its size — much like the Dell Mini 11z — and performance was snappy with Windows 7. The dual-core Atom puts it a step above today’s netbooks, if still slightly short of dual-core CULV chips. It played HD videos without any problems, though it was running pretty much flat out.

Drawbacks, there are a few. Windows 7 has touch capabilities, but that doesn’t mean it works as easily as an Apple iPad. You can use your fingers to operate software designed for the greater precision of a mouse pointer, but it’s not really comfortable on a 10in screen. It’s OK for web browsing in couch-potato mode, but you’ll often want to swivel the screen and use the keyboard instead. That’s why the easy conversion is so important.

The Duo comes with Dell’s Stage interface software, which is also used on the Dell Streak and Inspiron One all-in-one PCs. This provides a touch interface that seems mainly intended for playing music and movies and browsing through photos, though it also includes StickyNotes, YouPaint and Touch Instruments apps. It looks more child-friendly than sophisticated. The prototype also had movies downloaded from CinemaNow, which is a US-based service: Dell hasn’t announced a UK or European equivalent. The prototype lacked the Microsoft Surface software bundle that is sometimes shipped with touchscreen all-in-one PCs.

We know Microsoft can do multitouch well, because the Microsoft Surface does it, and that runs on top of Windows Vista. The Dell Duo really needs something like that to compete with the iPad as a tablet, and it’s not there.

However, it is both functional and chic, and it could therefore attract people who value the functionality of a real computer that offers things such as a physical keyboard, full Microsoft Office, Adobe Flash, multi-tab browsing and fast switching between different user accounts.

And that’s how Dell has priced it in the UK, at £449 including VAT and delivery. It’s competitive with Apple iPad prices that range from £429 (16GB) to £599 (64GB) with Wi-Fi only, plus £55 for a keyboard. The Duo’s relatively modest premium over a high-end netbook buys you the touchscreen and slick conversion to the tablet format, as well as full Windows 7 and a decent hard drive. If you were thinking about buying either a netbook or a tablet, the Duo does both, though it doesn’t do the tablet bit as well as an iPad.

Apart from the three capacitive buttons (back, menu, and home), mic, and camera on the front of the tablet, Dell's kept the design very clean. A plastic latch on the right edge, which can be hard to open if you don't have long nails, hides the SD and SIM card slots. The top of the device has a power button and volume rocker, and the left edge a 3.5mm headphone jack. Disappointingly, there's no HDMI output on the device itself; Dell will offer a separate dock that will attach to the PDMI port on the bottom of the device. A quick word on the PDMI port -- it is the same as the one on the original Streak, and because there's no other USB port on the tablet, you've got to have the cord handy to either charge it or connect it to computer to sideload files. Also, our review unit hasn't been charging via USB -- you have to plug it into the wall via its AC adapter. Yeah, it's pretty annoying.

In comparison to the Galaxy's 1024 x 600 resolution display, the Streak's 800 x 480 panel just looks cheap, and the experience is definitely felt when browsing, reading, looking at photos, or watching a high-definition clip. In a side-by-side comparison of the same photo, the Streak 7 just looked low-rate in comparison to the Tab's crisp rendering. Yep, it's pretty much a Pixel Density Enthusiast's nightmare.

Even more noticeable is how much brighter the Galaxy Tab's display is. Hands down, Samsung went with a better quality panel than Dell, and it really makes a huge difference considering, you know, the entire tablet experience is centered around the screen. That quality also translates to mediocre viewing angles -- when held horizontally at about 45 degrees, colors start to fade to black. Vertical viewing is better, although in comparison to the Galaxy Tab's screen, which can be seen at virtually every angle, it's yet again just second rate. Beyond all the actual viewing quality issues, the capacitive screen is extremely responsive, and it, along with the Tegra 2 processor, keeps it responding to our taps and flicks quickly. The accelerometer was equally as snappy, though we wish there was a quicker way to disable it than having to go through the display settings menu.

That's a playable frame rate, but it doesn't leave much room to grow.

You won't find much room for growth inside the DX4840-15's standard Gateway chassis, either. The midsize-tower case is fairly small, which limits your ability to swap in new components--and the untidy wiring job doesn't help. The motherboard offers one free PCIe x1 slot and one free PCIe x8 slot. You have enough space to replace the graphics card with something a bit more substantial; but if you attempt to do so, you'll also need to contend with the 300W power supply.

The chassis provides an open 5.25-inch drive bay and a pair of hard-drive bays for future expansion. The hard drives face outward, which would make accessing them rather simple--were everything not locked down by screws. Tool-free cases, however, are generally reserved for boutique vendors and for models higher up the desktop totem pole (particularly in the performance category), so that isn't too much of a disappointment.

Although the internal expansion options are lacking, Gateway has arranged a fair assortment of connectors around the DX4840-15. The front lip of the case has a pair of USB ports, along with a multiformat card reader, mouse and headphone jacks, and a shortcut button to Gateway's Photo Frame software (more on that in a bit). A bucket is available on the top of the case for resting your gadgets; it offers another pair of USB ports, too. The machine also sports a DVD burner.

On the rear are six more USB ports (for a total of ten). You'll also find PS/2 serial keyboard and mouse connectors, and a gigabit ethernet port; the graphics card, meanwhile, has DVI, HDMI, and VGA connectors. The machine also offers 802.11n Wi-Fi, courtesy of a PCIe card. The antenna's connectors are in an awkward spot: just below the graphics card, impeded by any monitor cables you'll attach. And those, like Jobs, Gates, and others that built off of government inventiveness, the inventiveness on which they built off of came from technological advancements in national security and war — an area of the budget the President is willing to cut.

Barack Obama’s speech was a terrible speech. The only saving grace for him is that it will not be remembered by the American public. Paul Ryan had much more substance and, surprisingly enough, Michelle Bachmann had the best speech of the night with both style and substance.

All and all, Barack Obama’s “sputnik moment” should stand in American history for a great buildup without delivery. Barack Obama did not jump the shark; he sputniked.
